Research

Jason Tarkin is a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Career Development Fellow and an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist with an imaging sub-specialty at the University of Cambridge. He has also been appointed as a Junior Research Fellow at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, and is an elected member of the British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging committee.

Jason was awarded summa cum laude with honors in Biology from the University of New Hampshire in 2003, and graduated with Distinction in Medicine from St. George's, University of London in 2008. He was awarded a PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2017, where he studied at Gonville and Caius College. For his Wellcome Trust-funded doctoral research on molecular imaging of inflammation and atherosclerotic plaque biology, Jason won both the American Heart Association Melvin Judkin’s Young Investigator Award in 2016 and the American College of Cardiology William W. Parmley Young Author Achievement Award in 2018.

His cardiology training was at the Barts Heart Centre, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, and Hammersmith Hospital, where he was also an NIHR Clinical Lecturer at the National Heart & Lung Institute.

His current research programme aims to examine potential clinical translational applications of somatostatin receptor PET/MRI as a marker of inflammation for studying disease mechanisms, use in drug discovery and guiding novel therapies in high-risk patients with cardiovascular disease and large vessel vasculitis.

In addition, he is a member of the British Heart Foundation Clinical Research Collaborative Steering Committee, the UK CARDIO-IMID Network Steering Committee, and the Editorial Board for Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging.
