Health of Blood Donors and its consequences for transfused patients

Speaker: Prof Gustaf Edgren Karolinska Institute, Sweden

Health of blood donors and its consequence for transfused patients – Prof Gustaf Edgren, Dept of Medicine Solna, Clinical Epidemiology Division, Karolinska Inst, Stockholm.

Blood donation is an altruistic, voluntary and non-remunerated act that is – by providing blood units for transfusion – crucial for the practice of modern medicine. As such, well-functioning donor services are crucial for public health. At the same time, the voluntary nature of blood donation does not remove responsibility from blood collecting authorities in ensuring the health and well-being of their donors. Given that donor health is an unavoidable prerequisite for a sustainable and safe blood supply, it is surprising that few studies have thoroughly investigated the impact of blood donation on donor health and of donor health on the outcomes of transfused patients. In his talk, Gustaf Edgren, will describe some of his research into donor health, health effects of blood donation and of the association between donor health and outcomes of transfused patients.
