Cambridge Cardiovascular

Dr Gabrielle Samuel (Kings College London) and Martin Farley (UKRI) will give a talk on exploring the results of two Carbon Footprinting Assessments that were carried out to understand the environmental impacts of biobanking.

The presentation will summarise the findings of a one year, UK-based, MRC-funded multidisciplinary research project, including:

  • Exploring the carbon impacts of different phases of a ULT-freezer lifecycle
  • Comparing the footprint of ULT freezer vs. liquid nitrogen storage
  • Unpacking the carbon costs of different forms of liquid nitrogen production and storage systems

It will also present the final output of the project – a roadmap for low-carbon ultra-low temperature storage in biobanking, that was developed through two qualitative stakeholder workshops. The roadmap offers recommendations associated with nine areas of ULT storage practice:

  • Four areas relating to ULT freezers
  • Three areas associated with LN2 storage
  • Two generalised discussions regarding biosample management and centralisation

This is the sixth in a programme of webinars on climate and sustainability run by the School through the year. These are informing the work of the School of Clinical Medicine Climate and Sustainability Action Group, chaired by Professor Ed Bullmore, deputy Head of School. They will support the School, its departments, and the wider University to accelerate action on climate change and do all we can to become sustainable in our work.

The webinars are open to all University staff and students. Please confirm your attendance via responding to generaldivision@medschl.cam.ac.uk

Zoom details will be sent shortly after confirmation of attendance.
