Papworth Hospital's move to Cambridge Biomedical Campus has now been approved by HM Treasury, following approval by the Department of Health in October 2013. Construction work for the new hospital buildings is expected to start in 2015 and be completed by end of 2017.
Papworth Hospital is one of the UK’s largest cardiothoracic hospitals, providing both volume of patients for large trials and unique patient cohorts for smaller pilot studies. Its move next to the Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge will provide new opportunities to cross-disciplinary research, allowing development and early translation of experimental medicine, devices, imaging and biomaterials. Both hospitals provide outstanding infrastructure support through active R&D departments, sponsorship for clinical research, the provision of a clinical governance structure, and vital pump-priming grants.
Linked to the move is a proposal for a Heart and Lung Research Institute (HLRI) between Papworth Hospital and the University of Cambridge, to also be built on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
