Impact of adventitial cells on artery physiology and disease
Veronique Angeli, from the Centre Méditerranéen de Médecin Moléculaire, Nice, France
Abstract
Compared to the intima and media, the adventitia continues to receive less attention in artery’s physiology and diseases such as atherosclerosis. However, evidence suggest that adventitia plays more than a structural role in vascular function and is involved in the genesis of atherosclerosis. In my talk, I will share two mechanisms by which adventitia may potentially maintain artery homeostasis and influence the progression of atherosclerosis. One mechanism involves adventitial lymphatic vessels through their role in reverse cholesterol transport and inflammation while the second one is mediated by adventitial resident macrophage expressing LYVE-1. We propose that a better understanding of the role of adventitial cells in regulating vascular function is expected to provide additional means to mitigate arterial diseases.
