Exploring Career Pathways

The workshop aims to showcase career paths that a researcher with a PhD can take that are different from the traditional academic route. During the day, we will have different sessions in which speakers will share their experiences in their current jobs and how they got there. Each session will also include a panel discussion to discuss openly with the audience. There will be time for networking during the lunch and breaks, and a drinks reception at the end.

Confirmed speakers are:

Deborah King, Vaccine Research Lead @ Wellcome Trust

Megan Carey, Associate Director - Antimicrobial Resistance Strategy @ IAVI

Fernando Gomollón-Bel, Co-Founder and Director @ Agata Communications

Roli Rolands, Senior Editor & Section Manager @ PLOS Biology

Ana Filipa Moutinho, Associate @ Faculty AI

Hector Newman, Senior Scientist @ Bicycle Therapeutics

Margarida Rodrigues, Research Strategy Facilitator @ Dept Vet Med, U. Cambridge

Yudan Ren, Returning Researcher, Daphne Jackson Fellow @ PDN, U. Cambridge

Ellen Higginson, Samples Lead @ Wellcome Sanger Institute

Ashraf Zarkan, Research Fellow @ U. Cambridge | Founder & CEO @ BioTryp Therapeutics

Phil Elstob, Commercialisation Director, Deputy Head of Life Sciences @ Cambridge Enterprise

All of our speakers started their careers in research, doing a PhD (most of them in life sciences), and then found their way into other roles.

We are waiting to confirm a couple of extra names (from UKRI and New England Biolabs) but you can keep an eye on the event website: https://www.infectiousdisease.cam.ac.uk/events/cid-ecr-career-development-workshop-exploring-career-pathways
