Patrick Calvert is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust specialising in coronary and structural intervention and Clinical Lead for Structural Intervention. From 2014-2016, he was a Consultant Cardiologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University Hospitals Birmingham where he was Cardiovascular Clinical Academic Group Lead.
At Royal Papworth, Dr Calvert undertakes a broad range of coronary and structural interventions. He graduated from the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford and trained in the Eastern Deanery for general and interventional cardiology. He undertook a PhD at Cambridge University investigating vulnerability in coronary plaques which resulted in several publications and prizes including the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society Young Investigators Award and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology Young Author Achievement Award (JACC Imaging).
He undertook a Fellowship in Paris in 2010 at Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Bichat. He continues his research into the vulnerable plaque and is Principle Investigator on several national database projects examining the health outcomes from coronary and structural interventions. He is on the EuroPCR Programme Committee and the TCT Scientific Committee (USA). Dr Calvert is currently the National Institute of Healthcare Research Clinical Research Network National Specialty Lead for Atherosclerosis and also Preventative Cardiovascular Diseases.
In January 2022, Dr Calvert was appointed as the Director of Research and Development at Royal Papworth Hospital.
Research
General Cardiology: including chest pain, murmurs and valve disease, palpitation/arrhythmia, dizziness/blackout, shortness of breath, heart failure, hypertension
Coronary Intervention: assessment and treatment of coronary artery disease (stable angina and myocardial infarction) including angiography and angioplasty and stenting (PCI), pressure wire (FFR), intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT)
Structutal Intervention: assessment and treatment of structural cardiac problems including valve disease and septal defects. Percutaneous valvuloplasty, percutaneous device closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD). Percutaneous device closure for paravalvular leak and post-infarction ventricular septal defect. Percutaneous device closure of left atrial appendage for stroke prophylaxis in atrial fibrillation. Alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.
Research Interests
Vulnerable Plaque Research: investigating what caused heart attacks using multi-modality imaging
National Database Research: investigating clinical outcomes of coronary and structural interventions using national databases and national collaborations.
