DVM MSc PhD DipECVIM-CA (Cardiology) AFHEA

Professor and Head of Veterinary Cardiology at the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Queen's Veterinary School Hospital, University of Cambridge. He is an EBVS® European Specialist and RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Cardiology.

As a clinician-scientist, his research focuses on feline cardiomyopathies and advanced cardiac imaging, with a strong translational emphasis bridging veterinary and human medicine. He has led or contributed to pioneering studies in feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) spanning its genomic architecture, the role of inflammation in disease progression, and the application of micro-computed tomography to investigate myocardial remodelling, left atrial morphology, and haemodynamics. He also develops machine learning tools for early cardiac disease detection and has refined echocardiographic techniques for enhanced phenotypic characterisation.

José founded and directs the Feline HCM Clinic- a dedicated centre for the diagnosis and longitudinal study of cardiomyopathies in cats, and the first of its kind worldwide.

His research is defined by a cross-disciplinary ethos, with partnerships spanning paediatric radiology, human cardiac pathology, biomedical engineering, and acoustic imaging technology. He serves as Associate Editor (Cardiology) at the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine and is Director of the ECVIM Cardiology Residency Programme at Cambridge. He is co-founder and co-host of The Animal Heartbeat- the first podcast dedicated to veterinary cardiology- which has reached over 70,000 downloads across 120 countries.
