Dr Paul Carter

Paul completed his medical degree at the University of Birmingham, where he also earned an intercalated BMedSc in Cardiovascular Sciences. He subsequently worked as an Academic Foundation doctor in London, conducting research at University College London, before moving to University of Cambridge to undertake an Academic Clinical Fellowship. During this fellowship, he carried out research within the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit and in the laboratory of Professor Peter Libby at Harvard University. This work sparked his interest in clonal haematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), which formed the foundation of his PhD at the University of Cambridge under the supervision of Professor Murray Clarke. His doctoral research focused on the relationship between CHIP and atherosclerosis and the underlying inflammatory mechanisms driving them, for which he was awarded the Lennard Memorial Award by the British Atherosclerosis Society. Paul is committed to a career as a clinician scientist, with a specialist interest in cardio-oncology. He is currently holds a position as an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Cardiology at University of Cambridge and is undertaking an Mst in Genomic Medicine.
