Most strokes and cardiac infarctions are due to atherosclerotic plaques rupture. High risk features, including fiber cap rupture/erosion and presence of intraplaque haemorrhage, have been proved to be more relevant than the degree of stenosis in differentiating patient clinical presentation and predicting subsequent adverse events. Moreover, under physiological conditions, lesions are subject to mechanical loading induced by blood pressure and flow. Plaque structure may fail if such loading exceeds its material strength. With this relevance, I am interested in the translational application of the combination of vascular wall imaging and biomechanical analysis. Non/mini-invasive imaging modalities, including MRI, PET/CT, VH-IVUS and OCT, are used to visualise morphological and compositional features of atherosclerotic lesions and mechanical analysis is employed to quantify the loading, including tensile stress, stretch and shear stress.
