Dr Joe Newman, Cambridge

‘How could your smartphone or wearable help to test drugs of the future? Digital technology in remote patient-centred clinical trials’

Joe is a British Heart Foundation Clinical Research Fellow and PhD student at the HLRI in Mark Toshner’s group. He works closely with health technology companies and third-sector patient organisations to collaboratively co-design and test digital endpoints for use in remote drug trials. Joe is an investigator involved in several clinical studies in pulmonary hypertension through Royal Papworth Hospital’s Research and Development Department. He won the Precision Health Innovation Competition in 2023 and the ERS/ELF Award for Best Patient-Centred Research in 2024. His gateway into research was through COVID-19 studies including observational cohorts and therapeutical trials. Joe has leadership roles within the British and European Thoracic Societies, and previously completed a Masters in Medical Education. He is keen to encourage patients (and healthy volunteers) to participate in studies, and also clinical colleagues to get involved in research. This starts at home with Joe trying to inspire his daughters into STEM (they’re both under 5…) Joe is due to return to his respiratory medicine clinical training at Addenbrookes in March 2025 but is excited to share some highlights of his research before he goes!
