Immune Dysregulation in Cardiovascular Disease: From Novel Mechanisms to Therapeutic Targeting

Prof. Pasquale Maffia serves as the School’s International Lead and co-lead of the ARUA/Guild Africa-Europe CoRE in Non-Communicable Diseases & Multimorbidity.

He is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, the British Pharmacological Society, and the European Society of Cardiology.

He is the Vice-President and Chair of the Engagement Committee for the British Pharmacological Society (BPS), Chair of the Immunopharmacology Committee for the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR), and Chair of the Translational Research Medical Review Panel for Heart Research UK (HRUK). Additionally, I am a Nucleus Member of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Working Group on Atherosclerosis & Vascular Biology and serve on the Executive Committee of the British Atherosclerosis Society (BAS). I am also part of the Fellowship Committee of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and the Immunotherapy Committee of the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS).

He is the Deputy Editor of Cardiovascular Research, Associate Editor of Pharmacological Research, and Editor-in-Chief of the Human Health Section of Frontiers for Young Minds. Additionally, I serve on the editorial boards of several journals, including Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology (ATVB) and Scientific Reports.

He has a strong interest in the role of the immune response in cardiovascular diseases. His research encompasses both basic and clinical studies, with a focus on understanding and targeting immune and inflammatory mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis, hypertension, and heart failure. He has published over 130 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals including Nature GeneticsNature Reviews ImmunologyNature Reviews CardiologyLancet Global HealthImmunityEuropean Heart JournalCirculation, and Circulation Research.
